Does nature pull you to a place of serenity?

I never thought the move to the country 20 years ago would have such a profound effect on my life. Connecting to nature was like coming home. In some small way it's also the feeling and emotion I try to convey through my work. Connecting to self, to others and to heart. To bring nature into the home in a gentle, quiet and peaceful way.

How do you find serenity?

"Where I create" - It isn't so much a place, as a

"Where I create" - It isn't so much a place, as a state of being. When you're in the element of feeling like you're doing what you were created for, there's a sense of wholeness and peace. I create from a place deep within.

My art studio is a place where I can gather tools, mediums and have space to ponder, dream and experiment. To play, to create, to share my artwork and space with others and bring to life the unexpected. The final artwork.

It's magical, spiritual and devine. It brings joy not only to myself but to those who collect art. That's where the magic is ... the joy, the smiles, the connection.

Did you know that I'm mostly self taught? In the e

Did you know that I'm mostly self taught? In the early 1990s, I learnt a few techniques from a folk art teacher. How to clean brushes, how to form brush strokes, but it didn't challenge me. For a short while I broke away into finding my own style of decorative painting. It was less 'folk', leaning more towards elements of realism. Parenthood took priority, so I stopped painting for many years. It wasn't till about 2017 that I picked up a brush again and decided I wanted to learn to paint.

I was curious about watercolour painting and signed up for an online subscription with @annamasonart as I was inspired by and interested in botanical art. I learnt so much about colour mixing, composition and watercolour techniques, which I began to transfer over into painting on canvas.

The biggest lesson I learnt was to trust my instinct and God given gifts. To paint from the heart. I never felt comfortable saying I was good at anything. To do so would mean overshadowing those who wanted to keep me small. Now, in my new journey of freedom and self-discovery, I'm on a journey of finding my strengths and being proud to own them. Part of that is trialling different styles and techniques in my work like in this painting. It's more stylised and contemporary but I'm not sure if it's the path i want to take.

The final glazes went on this painting this afternoon. This painting is finished with only the varnish to go. I've yet to give it a title. It think it will look fantastic hanging on a wall.

Painting something this big and so detailed, has been a challenge, but an enjoyable one.

👉 Please help a gal out! . Do I save this for an exhibition, or put the original up for sale once it's done or keep it and sell prints?

I've had a dream of hosting an open studio exhibition for years, possibly as part of SALA but have never taken the plunge for fear of not being well enough to open my doors. I have a real fear of letting people down, and letting myself down in the process. Having lived with chronic illness for so long, I can't trust my body to behave, especially when I might overdo things.

To hold an exhibition I need to have a collection of work. This could be a start. On the other hand, I've put very little of my work up for sale, and I'm thinking maybe I need to take the plunge and just start advertising? Imposter syndrome kicks in, and I wonder, would anyone buy my work for what it's worth? So many artists undersell their artwork to get a sale. However, having been in business for nearly 20 years, I'm not about to start doing that now. It's a conundrum. It's such a balancing act too.

What do I do? If you've got any suggestions pop them in the comments or let me know in the poll below.

Have you lost things that fed your soul? ❤️ I

Have you lost things that fed your soul? ❤️ I had. I lit a scented candle this evening. It was a small gesture but one which I was unable to do for two decades for fear of put downs.

For years, I felt hollow and fearful. It was when I began to reclaim the things that fed my soul, the things that set me apart like my artwork, that the cracks really opened up in my marriage. I was challenging the status quo, the subtle subjugation tactics, questioning the gaslighting. I was told everything was my fault so the ructions weren't much different, except that I began to challenge that reality. Things changed. I was told I was being difficult, suspicious, critical! I learnt to see and recognise the patterns of abuse. With that knowledge I began to find an inner strength, and with it began to reclaim my voice. My fear was heightened as I was able to pre-empt what was to come and witness the escalation... just as the counsellors had warned me.

I feel audacious writing this. I know he and his flying monkeys watch and gossip and plan the next attack. The next lie. But I want to give other survivors hope.

Take hold of the little things that make you happy. Make you content.

I can now display and use things without fear of them being damaged or broken. I want that for you too. Go light a candle. 🕯

Healing from what I'm recognising as trauma is a slow process. The unpacking of memories, recognising the head games. It's a beautiful process, much like the unfurling of the petals of a flower. Maybe that's why I enjoy painting them. Each petal is another piece of the puzzle of my identity that I'd lost, but can now reclaim. I am feeling a contentment I thought long lost, and with it, inner strength.

I'm working on a rose that will never fade! Join me for a quick talk through today's progress on the rose painting. I wish I could remember the name of this climbing rose. Crepascule rings a bell, but I think that might be one of my shrub roses.

Like if you're a hermit too! We all need our time to cosy up in our homes, swan around in our jammies and simply enjoy the nest we've created. While I'm there I can't help but do some of the many things that make my ❤️ sing, like paint, or simply watch the birds outside my window! It's good for the soul to just 'be'.

🌹AH, BUT IS IT A ROSE 🌹 OR ... here's the story... 😅

☎️ Mondays are always busy. I run a small fabrication workshop and the phone and inbox seem to frantically work against me as people clamber to get quotes. In amongst the calls though there are usually some very nice people who are a joy to talk to.

I had a lovely lady call me about her fence and gate and shortly before I ended the call, she quickly said she'd looked at my art page. She was so kind and gushed over my artwork. I told her I was presently working on a rose. I talked about it a little, saying it had so many petals.

"Well, at least it's not a dahlia," she said laughingly.

🏆 I said, "it has more petals than one!" It was at that point I realised I'd achieved my goal of challenging myself - a little too well!

I sat down after work today to do a little more on it. It's next to my office desk ... probably not a good thing as I keep looking at it, wanting to paint. I have strategically put the desk by the window so I can see my Pierre de Ronsard rose and the blue wrens, as they flit down to bathe in a makeshift birdbath. Okay, it's just a saucer with a rock, but they like it, so it's actually a lovely place to work. I digress.

🖌 Paintbrush in hand, I managed to paint just one tiny petal before I got completely lost. Like a dancer with two left feet, no matter how I tried, hand, eye, and brain were not working together. I ended up back with a pencil mapping out petals and shadows. I would have done a cartographer proud.
