Did you know there's a story behind the 'Peony in

Did you know there's a story behind the 'Peony in a teacup' series of watercolour paintings? I've never shared this before because I felt that you, the viewer, need to find your own meaning in #paintings, and I don't want to take that away.

For me, each painting held the following story. The peony is a symbol of love and hope and teacups are reminiscent of connection to others. I painted these during a turbulent time in my life while I was going through the stages of realising my marriage was falling apart, and that what I was experiencing was a form of DV. I was living in hope, but also beginning to recognise the reality of my situation. My cup was empty and I was yearning for connection.

The first painting I created (in image 2) reflects the realisation of how I was feeling broken. I held on to hope but felt empty, alone and depleted.

Image 3: yellow peony in purple teacup. I held on to hope and tried to look at the bright side, looking for glimmers (of gold) and exercising gratitude for little things.

Image 4: burgundy peony in rose teacup. I was cut down with every effort to address issues - just like the bud in this painting. It also represents all the times I tried to call out and nip abusive behaviours in the bud only to be cut down again. The colours of blood reflecting my pain at that time.

By the time I painted no 4, I was pondering what a new start in life might look like. Butterflies are symbolic of new beginnings, and the chintz flowers represent all the little parts of me that were eroded.

Although my story is dark in some ways, I hope that you'll find your own meaning in them. Hopefully one of hope, resilience and connection.

These paintings are available as archive quality, limited edition, giclee prints from my website in different sizes. They are sold as signed and numbered prints.

Does nature pull you to a place of serenity?

I never thought the move to the country 20 years ago would have such a profound effect on my life. Connecting to nature was like coming home. In some small way it's also the feeling and emotion I try to convey through my work. Connecting to self, to others and to heart. To bring nature into the home in a gentle, quiet and peaceful way.

How do you find serenity?

"Where I create" - It isn't so much a place, as a state of being. When you're in the element of feeling like you're doing what you were created for, there's a sense of wholeness and peace. I create from a place deep within.

My art studio is a place where I can gather tools, mediums and have space to ponder, dream and experiment. To play, to create, to share my artwork and space with others and bring to life the unexpected. The final artwork.

It's magical, spiritual and devine. It brings joy not only to myself but to those who collect art. That's where the magic is ... the joy, the smiles, the connection.

Did you know that I'm mostly self taught? In the early 1990s, I learnt a few techniques from a folk art teacher. How to clean brushes, how to form brush strokes, but it didn't challenge me. For a short while I broke away into finding my own style of decorative painting. It was less 'folk', leaning more towards elements of realism. Parenthood took priority, so I stopped painting for many years. It wasn't till about 2017 that I picked up a brush again and decided I wanted to learn to paint.

I was curious about watercolour painting and signed up for an online subscription with @annamasonart as I was inspired by and interested in botanical art. I learnt so much about colour mixing, composition and watercolour techniques, which I began to transfer over into painting on canvas.

The biggest lesson I learnt was to trust my instinct and God given gifts. To paint from the heart. I never felt comfortable saying I was good at anything. To do so would mean overshadowing those who wanted to keep me small. Now, in my new journey of freedom and self-discovery, I'm on a journey of finding my strengths and being proud to own them. Part of that is trialling different styles and techniques in my work like in this painting. It's more stylised and contemporary but I'm not sure if it's the path i want to take.

The final glazes went on this painting this afternoon. This painting is finished with only the varnish to go. I've yet to give it a title. It think it will look fantastic hanging on a wall.

Painting something this big and so detailed, has been a challenge, but an enjoyable one.

👉 Please help a gal out! . Do I save this for an exhibition, or put the original up for sale once it's done or keep it and sell prints?

I've had a dream of hosting an open studio exhibition for years, possibly as part of SALA but have never taken the plunge for fear of not being well enough to open my doors. I have a real fear of letting people down, and letting myself down in the process. Having lived with chronic illness for so long, I can't trust my body to behave, especially when I might overdo things.

To hold an exhibition I need to have a collection of work. This could be a start. On the other hand, I've put very little of my work up for sale, and I'm thinking maybe I need to take the plunge and just start advertising? Imposter syndrome kicks in, and I wonder, would anyone buy my work for what it's worth? So many artists undersell their artwork to get a sale. However, having been in business for nearly 20 years, I'm not about to start doing that now. It's a conundrum. It's such a balancing act too.

What do I do? If you've got any suggestions pop them in the comments or let me know in the poll below.
